Rosenwald Schools in King & Queen Researched by Preservation Virginia
On March 29 representatives of Preservation Virginia, an organization dedicated to making communities stronger by preserving their history and providing related education, shared their research on Rosenwald Schools in King & Queen County and requested information held by the Museum. Rosenwald Schools were segregated black schools built between 1918-1932 with architectural plans and some funding from the Rosenwald Foundation. The Museum information included funding by local residents, a map of the school locations, and photographs of the buildings. Residents of King & Queen County and King William County with first hand knowledge also shared their photographs and data. Of the Rosenwald schools built in the county only Green Briar School still stands, located on property owned by New Morningstar Baptist Church whose congregation is preserving it.
