Archaeological History of the Powhatan Landscape Presented

At the 2018 Third Quarter King & Queen County Historical Society meeting, Dr. Martin Gallivan, professor in the Anthropology Department at the College of William and Mary spoke about the archaeological history of the Powhatan landscape, covering the archaeology and cultural history of Native societies in the Chesapeake. King and Queen County was in the heart of the Powhatan nation. Dr. Gallivan painted a picture of local societies before the advent of Europeans and offered insights into their responses to colonialism. He used his research from the excavations at the Powhatan political center of Werowocomoco on the York River to tell the story. He is interested in further developing this historical research. Dr. Gallivan’s book The Powhatan Landscape: An Archaeolgical History of the Algonquin Chesapeake (Society and Ecology in Island Coastal Archaeology was published in 2016.
